NT_ASSERT in Vista free build

I am getting an NT_ASSERT in the debugger that occurs when my device is operating in a PCI-X slot on i386 Vista RTM or ANY PCI slot in the 64-bit version.

My understanding was that NT_ASSERT was a NOP in free builds of Vista. Has anyone else seen these?

David Bradsher

Where are you hitting the int 2c? I haven’t tried it in the RTM, but in the
betas the ever popular “a DPC is taking way too long” breakpoint in was
present in the free build.

(Hit send too soon) To clarify:

“a DPC is taking way too long” breakpoint was present in the free build as
an int 2c

Assertion failure - code c0000420 (first chance)
nt! ?? ::FNODOBFM::string'+0x42a5: fffff80001836cea cd2c int 2Ch

Not much information there…

This gets thrown when I start the test application to send streaming (ASCII) data to a multiport serial device. I was also under the impression that the NT_DEBUG was supposed to blue-screen if a debugger wasn’t attached. Tried this Friday hoping I could get some insight from a crash dump. All I get is a locked-up target platform.

Are your symbols correct? What’s the rest of the call stack?

Is debugging enabled (i.e. “bcdedit /debug on” on the target machine)? If
debugging is enabled the system is going to wait for a debugger to attach
and check out the exception. If debugging is not enabled you should get a
blue screen.

Oops - forgot about /debug being on. Not quite accustomed to the bcdedit stuff yet. I’ll try this again .

Thanks Scott!

No good - just to be sure I turned off debug both in the normal boot config AND the debug config & rebooted. Still just freezes the machine - no blue screen.
Reinstalled a baseline Vista image & reinstalled the drivers - still nothing.

I thought I had got this OS to BSOD with this device before (last version of the driver & WDF 1.1) but now that I think about it that was on 32-bit Vista.

Can’t even get a blue screen when you want! Back to the debugger:

The stack looks a bit of a mess (I’m a fan of the AMD64 architecture, but it
certainly doesn’t make debugging any easier)

Have you instrumented your code at all to see what’s going on? It looks like
you might be in the midst of an interrupt storm.
