How simulate power state transition on VirtualBox

I have a problem that is related to cases when the system is 'going to sleep'. It's all there in another thread. I find it hard to debug on my VirtualBox guests since they do not show 'Sleep' in their system menu. Is there a way to force a guest to show a 'Sleep' entry? Is there a way to programatically force a guest to go to sleep?
