Is WHQL signature mandatory for NDIS driver?

Hello!

I need make NDIS driver intermediate or miniport (I did not decide
yet.). The problem is following.
Some times ago Windows did not accept obvious Verisign signature for
such drivers and required approving from Microsoft and WHQL signature.

Can anybody clarify this question. Is WHQL signature mandatory for any
types of drivers and which ones?

Thank you,
Valery

As far as I know the only drivers that are *mandatory* whql are ones that
are involved with DRM. More specifically you can still release sign ndis
drivers, and they will install in vister-win10.

Effectively it is required for all pnp classed drivers and has been for
a long time now.

I really have to disagree with that. WHQL is not required, it is
recommended.

Sure, have fun getting users to install it though.

Hi,

If you create a class device this have to be signed whql in order to avoid at install
a popup notification that is asking for user input to check the driver trust.

Thank you.

At list, I’d recommend you to use WHQL tests for NDIS for test purpose.
Microsoft have developed not bad test set for NDIS.

Regards,
MG.

Yes, I did it.
I’ve signed .sys file with verisign certificate, and .cat file with cross
cerificate. Driver is installed successfully, BUT …
It shows security warning about untrusted publisher. I need avoid such
warning for remote installation.

Thanks
Valery

Pre-install your public cert as documented in the “release signing” section
of the kernel driver signing walkthrough doc.

The vast majority of users don’t know enough to care. Have you ever
watched them? “Install driver, OK, OK, OK, OK. Problem solved, user
happy, back to Flappy Birds 3D.”
