The Bug Bash Has Been Completed, with...
A Big Thank You To The Community!

As a result of your fantastic participation, the WDK Community Bug Bash  end at the end of January 2011, and was a great success.  We're so proud of how the community stepped-up to help find and fix bugs in the WDK, and so happy at the extensive participation!  And, of course, we're grateful to our friends in the Microsoft WDK team (and the development team members) for their tremendous support behind-the-scenes.

Over 150 bugs were submitted to the bug bash... and, because every person who submitted a valid bug to the Bug Bash got a prize, tons of prizes were distributed.

Of course, there are also the big prize winners.  In fact, we got so many great bugs submitted we added an "Honorable Mention" category in addition to the two First Prize and three Second Prize winners.

The criteria we used to judge the bugs was:

  • Severity of the identified bug
  • Impact of the identified bug on those whom the judges deem “typical” Window driver writers
  • Correctness of the specified fix.

In evaluating both severity and impact, we considered many things including how likely it was that a well informed and conscientious driver developer might ship a driver with the described bug latent in their code.  After all, having bugs that creep up on you silently, in the field, are some of the worst types of bugs that you're likely to encounter.

The winners are:

First Prize

Prizes: HP Mini-210 Netbook, 1 year Visual Studio Ultimate with MSDN subscription, free registration at an OSR Kernel Debugging and Crash Analysis for WIndows seminar.  Approximate value: US$15,000 (the MSDN subscription is worth about $10K retail, that's why the value is so high).

Winners:

Second Prize

Prizes: Apple iPod Touch, WIndows 7 Ultimate, OSR Prize Pack.  Approximate value: US$800.

Winners:

Honorable Mention

The Bug Bash didn't even originally have an Honorable Mention category, but given we got so many great bugs, we felt like the following two individuals deserved to be recognized for their excellent submissions.

Prizes: WIndows 7 Ultimate, Choice of gifts from the OSR Online Store.  Approximate value: US$400.
